During our visit to Kanchipuram, we were looking to visit a Hanuman temple. After a quick Google search, we stumbled upon a lesser-known Hanuman temple located approximately 9 kilometers from Kanchipuram: the Sanjeevirayar temple.
Legend has it that during Hanuman’s journey carrying the Sanjeevi hill to Sri Lanka, a few fragments of the hill fell at this very spot, giving rise to the temple’s name, Sanjeevarayar.
We arrived at the temple around 4 PM, hoping it would be open, but the priest didn’t arrive until around 4:30 PM. During the half-hour wait, I took the opportunity to explore the temple’s surroundings and had a wonderful time at the back of the temple, where a vast 150-acre water tank lay. The reflection of the temple on the water’s surface was truly breathtaking.
Close to this temple is the Nadavavi well, which we regretfully missed due to time constraints. It, too, has a fascinating story behind it, which you can delve into further by reading more about it here.
